At least 6 distinct varieties of hereditary polyposis of the gastrointestinal tract can be identified. The clinical and genetic characteristics are different. In 3 of the 6, the occurrence of extra-alimentary manifestations aids diagnosis. Intestinal polyposis illustrates the usefulness of genetic understanding in the practice of preventive medicine in families.
