The element specific magnetic susceptibilities of some rare-earth compounds are estimated by measuring magnetic circular dichroism at rare-earth M 4,5 absorption edges. The temperature dependences of the rare-earth 4 f local magnetic susceptibilities in dense Kondo materials, CeNi, CeSn 3 and CeRu 4 Sb 12 , are remarkably different from those of the bulk magnetic susceptibilities measured by a conventional magnetometer, although the 4 f electron is regarded to mainly hold the magnetic moment in these compounds. In contrast, the rare-earth 4 f local magnetic susceptibility of ferromagnetic NdFe 4 P 12 shows almost as similar behavior as the bulk one.
