The stopping cross section of bulk graphitic carbon for $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ particles of energy 0.3-2.0 MeV has been measured absolutely and relative to vapor-deposited carbon, and is found to be \ensuremath{\sim}6-28% higher than the corresponding value of vapor-deposited carbon. The difference is attributed to an allotropic effect.
