Dispersion of Surface States on W(100) and the Surface Reconstruction

The dispersion and symmetry of the surface states along the $\overline{\ensuremath{\Gamma}}\ensuremath{-}\overline{M}$ symmetry line of the W(100) surface Brillouin zone have been determined with use of high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission. Comparison with available calculations shows poor agreement, throwing serious doubts on the role played by the surface states in the W(100) reconstruction.
