68.3: Gray Scales for Video Applications on Electrowetting Displays

Abstract

Abstract Electrowetting displays combine bright reflective colors and low‐power consumption enabling displays to be used in office environments as well as outdoor in bright sunlight. This paper reports on gray scale generation on an active matrix display with a resolution of 170 ppi. We present the results for both pulse width modulation (PWM) and amplitude modulation (AM). Using a limited number of gray scales a very large range of brightness levels is obtained due to the scaling of the brightness of the display with ambient light intensity.
