Abstract

This paper discuss the application of Taguchi method for the optimization of surface roughness in machining of titanium alloy in continuous turning by nanocoated carbide insert. The use of conventional tool in machining of titanium alloy increases the tool wear rate. In the present investigation, nanocoated carbide insert is used for the analysis of machining titanium alloy. The cutting parameters considered are cutting speed, feed, nose radius and depth of cut. The effect of machining parameters on surface quality is established and the optimum cutting condition for minimizing the surface roughness is determined using S/N ratio. Analysis of Variance is used to find the most influencing parameter which influences the surface roughness. From the results, it is known that feed is the most influential parameter followed by cutting speed, nose radius and depth of cut. Chipformation during machining of titanium alloy has been examined for different cutting parameters. The tool wear and surface quality of work piece are studied by using (SEM) scanning electron microscope.
