Abstract

In Mexico City in 1962–63 we conducted tests to determine whether the intestinal tract of the Mexican fruit fly, Anastrepha ludens (Loew), contained a bacterial symbiont as in the olive fruit fly, Dacus oleae (Gmelin) (Petri 1909). We reasoned that if we could demonstrate that such an organism were present, the fly could possibly be eradicated by application of an antibiotic (Richards and Brooks 1958) or some other chemical.
