Although the medical journal (1) estimate of 53 cases and 3 deaths attributable to her is far below the 1,300 victims claimed in a recent article in Pageant (2), the salmonella carrier problem is still with us. Furthermore, nearly all cases of typhoid these days are from carrier contacts. This paper describes the role of antibiotic treatment and cholecystectomy in the control of the salmonella carrier state and reviews the reasons for the occasional failure.HISTORYCredit for the earliest concept of the fecal spread of typhoid or enteric...References1.
