Summary A quantitative study has been made in vitro of the phagocytosis of bacteria by haemocytes from freshwater crayfish ( Pamchaeraps bicarinatus) . The data presented show that the uptake of bacteria by these cells is dependent on certain recognition factors which may be present either free in the haemolymph or associated with the plasma membrane of phagocytic cells.
