Processing procedures developed to convert spent Leghorn hens into feedstuffs were studied. Heating freshly killed ground spent hens in a continuous fluidized bed oven followed by steeping in an insulated chamber or extruding produced pathogen-negative, high protein-high energy ingredients. When fed to broilers from days 1-21 at levels of 3-9%, these diets supported good growth and feed conversion.
