CO₂ storage in underground reservoirs or saline aquifers is a key strategy for mitigating greenhouse gases and enhancing oil and gas recovery, but its feasibility hinges on the integrity of many wells, particularly old abandoned ones, whose assessment remains a significant challenge. The study proposes a comprehensive well‑integrity evaluation method and applies Monte Carlo simulation to estimate CO₂ leakage rates and the risk of exceeding a specified threshold. The method employs Monte Carlo simulation to model CO₂ leakage rates and assess the probability of surpassing a predetermined limit. The calculations provide decision‑support information on well integrity, enabling stakeholders to assess leakage risk.
Storage of CO2 in underground reservoir or saline aquifer is one important means of mitigating greenhouse effect on the environment and enhancing oil and gas recovery. One of preconditions for the feasibility of such a project is well integrity of the large amounts of wells in the field, especially old abandoned wells. The evaluation of well integrity for plugged and abandoned wells is a big challenge but very important. The author introduces one comprehensive well integrity evaluation method, and then uses Monte Carlo simulation technique to estimate CO2 leakage rate and the risk of exceeding a predetermined limit. The results of calculation are going to help people make decisions about the well integrity.
