A 17-member committee chaired by Allan Rosenfield Dean of the Columbia University School of Public Health believes there is a considerable need to develop new contraceptives and related reproductive health technologies. 11 recommendations were developed to that end. The first five recommendations concern which new scientific prospects may reenergize the field while the remaining six address the climate and resources required. The recommendations are unified by their practicality at the middle ground of policy and designed to respond to what appears to be the needs of a significant majority of sexually active people with unmet contraceptive need. The recommendations are presented. The committee cautions however that laws regulations politics ideology economics and individual behavior may all interact synergistically to lead one to believe that nothing can be done to develop and market new modes of contraception.
