Later studies, using more satisfactory methods, were applied to the investigation of liver disease for the first time by Burchi in 1927 (3), by Van Caulaert and Deviller in their extensive studies in Strasbourg in 1932 (4), and by Esben Kirk in 1935 (5).Van Caulaert and Esben Kirk had noticed in cirrhotic subjects temporary elevation of the venous blood ammonia after an oral test dose of ammonium salts. They...References1. HAHNMASSENNENCKIPAVLOV MOMJ: Die Eck-sche Fistel zwischen der unteren Hohlvene und der Pfortader und ihre Folgen für den Organismus. Arch. Exp. Path. Pharmakol. 32: 161, 1893.
