A radical change: A chemical modification of the amyloid-β (Aβ) peptide transformed methionine residue 35 in α-aminobutyric acid. Hydrogen atoms produced by γ irradiation of aqueous solutions selectively attack Met 35, with formation of the modified peptide (see scheme) and sulfur-centered radicals. By using a peptide–liposome model, the formation of trans-lipids has also been evaluated as a marker for this radical damage.
