1D and 2D polyoxometalate-based composite compounds. Synthesis and crystal structure of [{Ba(DMSO)5(H2O)}2(SiMo12O40)] and [{Ba(DMSO)3(H2O)3}{Ba(DMSO)5(H2O)}(GeMo12O40)]

The composites [{Ba(DMSO)5(H2O)}2(SiMo12O40)] (1) and [{Ba(DMSO)3(H2O)3}{Ba(DMSO)5(H2O)}(GeMo12O40)] (2) have been synthesized and characterized by IR and UV spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray structural analysis. Compound 1 forms an unprecedented one-dimensional linear chain built from alternating polyanions and cationic units in the crystal, whereas crystalline 2 contains a novel two-dimensional network made up of polyanions, metal ions, H2O, and DMSO. The chain and net are both connected through Mo–Ot-Ba-O-Ba links.
