In the course of a medico-genetic-anthropological investigation in I963 of the population of the island of Tongariki, in the Shepherd group of the New Hebrides, a haemoglobin variant was detected with a mobility which was greater than that of normal Hb on electrophoresis at alkaline pH, both by starch gel and by paper electrophoresis.
