Modern optimal control techniques are applied to design passive systems consisting of linear dampers, rotary dampers, or dynamic absorbers, to minimize transient vibrations of slender uniform beams. A number of control configurations are considered. The controller parameters as well as locations along the beam are optimized, and data are presented on the sensitivity of the optimal designs to parameters variations. The particular purpose is to show the advantages of the technique in adjusting the dynamics to satisfy various requirements.
