This exploratory paper demonstrates the quantitative response of H 2 , N 2 , and O 2 in 50% argon-50% helium to a 20-A dc arc and 1% thoriated-tungsten electrodes. This work also illustrates the feasibility of exciting the spectra of these gases, as well as chlorine, at atmospheric pressure and at other relatively simple conditions with a minimum of special facilities.
