ABSTRACT Relatively few articles have examined the role of vocabulary in communicative approaches to foreign‐language teaching. In this article, we discuss the selection and presentation of vocabulary in current teaching materials and suggest alternative strategies that more closely reflect the goals of communicative curricula.
