Abstract

Temperature dependence of magnetic birefringence of magnetic fluids under a magnetic field H was studied. Temperature dependence of the phase difference θ between the two modes of the rays with polarization parallel and perpendicular to the field H was found to obey the generalized Curie-Weiss law, or θ∝ (T-T0(H))-1 where T is the temperature of the magnetic fluid. The function T0 of H satisfies the empirical formula, T0 (H) ∝ exp (-αH), where α is a constant.
