Abstract Phosphorus‐containing vinyl esters and vinyl carbamates were synthesized as new biocompatible and degradable photopolymers. Reactivity of the monomers with one, two, and three polymerizable double bonds was evaluated by photo‐differential scanning calorimetry. With respect to their potential application in the biomedical field, studies on cytotoxicity, mechanical stability, and hydrolytic erosion behavior of the poly(vinyl alcohol)‐based derivatives were performed. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
