Abstract Infrared reflectivity measurements are perfformed with a scanning interferometer on single crystals of KNbO3 up to high temperatures. A singnifiant softening of the lowest frequency optical mode is emphasized in the paraelectric phase. The phase transition mechanism is discussed.
