Abstract Recent vacuum ultra-violet spectroscopic data for the 1Σ g +> ground state of the krypton dimer have been analysed using the Rydberg-Klein-Rees procedure, giving the width of the potential energy well as a function of its depth. The results have been used to discriminate between proposed potential energy functions for krypton and to illustrate the conformal nature of the argon and krypton potentials. A refined potential function has been determined by the inversion of the thermo-physical properties of gaseous krypton and shown to be consistent with the spectroscopic data.
