Abstract Rapid manual techniques have been developed for the determination of sulfur and phosphorus in plant material. After digestion with magnesium nitrate solution and perchloric acid, sulfur is determined turbidimetrically using Tween 80 as a stabiliser, while phosphorus is determined colorimetrically as the vanado‐molybdate complex. Samples can be analysed for both sulfur and phosphorus at the rate of 100 samples per man‐day, with a minimum capital outlay.
