Because youth subcultures often center on musical tastes, it seems likely that musical genre is an important source of variation between music videos. This assumption is examined through a content analysis of 767 videos from four cable networks. Differences were found by gender, race, and narrative devices across the genres of rap, soul, country, heavy metal, pop, classical rock, and alternative rock.
