Inner-shell photoionization from the 2s shell of atomic sodium in the ground and first laser-excited states has been investigated. Strong electron correlation effects manifest themselves in a number of satellite emissions in addition to the main line. They could be observed directly by detecting the photoelectrons and indirectly by detecting corresponding Auger electrons. Evidence has been found indicating that correlation effects are enhanced in laser-excited sodium compared to ground-state sodium.
