Novel coordination chemistry-based multilayers can be self-assembled by alternate immersion of amine-functionalized substrates in CoCl2 and 1,4-diisocyanobenzene (DiCNB) solutions. Resulting multilayers show uniform film growth with increasing number of Co−DiCNB layers. This system provides alternative chemistry to silane-based, carboxylate or metal−bis(phosphonate) multilayer self-assembly, expanding the potential properties and applications of multilayer thin films.
