A new hydrogen sensor has been demonstrated that provides a large signal for concentrations of hydrogen in air near the explosive limit. This optical fiber sensor is intrinsically safe for use in potentially explosive environments. The sensor responds to changes in the optical properties of a thin palladium film exposed to hydrogen.
