Abstract Sexuality was not a taboo subject in ancient India as long as it was within the context of marriage. Many books and treatises have been written on the subject over the centuries. Temples from the 5th century onwards show sculptures of deities, apsaras (heavenly nymphs) and ordinary people in erotic postures. Over the centuries, various invaders have influenced social, cultural and sexual practices in India. A society's beliefs take generations to change. People who have emmigrated to the West from the Indian subcontinent have carried with them their own beliefs. It may take many generations to change their views. Whether all changes would be for the better is questionable. Bearing this in mind, it is important for the therapist working with Indian immigrants to understand and use their beliefs when counselling them, along with modem strategies and interventions. Although there are many different faiths in India, their cultural values are often similar. Therefore, for the purpose of this article, the word India will denote the Indian subcontinent.
