Abstract A description is given of an adaptive finite element method for the simulation of two dimensional compressible flows with moving boundaries. The method is implemented on an unstructured triangular grid and the mesh adaptation is achieved by local grid regeneration, using an error estimation procedure coupled to an automatic triangular mesh generator. Two numerical examples are included to illustrate the numerical performance of the method.
