Single crystals of activated with Nd3+ were studied by high resolution selective site laser spectroscopy. The optical properties of Nd3+ions located at various inequivalent sites were correlated with Nd3+ site symmetries obtained from electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements and also with the polarizations predicted by group theory. Two types of Nd3+ sites were observed with site symmetry, two with , and one with no symmetry. Models for these centers are proposed, and the effect of growth conditions on the distribution of Nd3+ among these various sites is discussed.
