Abstract

Query languages for XML such as XPath or XQuery support Boolean retrieval where \na query result is a (possibly restructured) subset of XML elements or entire \ndocuments that satisfy the search conditions of the query. Web search engines, \non the other hand, are based on the ranked retrieval paradigm, but do not \nconsider the additional information and rich annotations provided by the \nstructure of XML documents and their element names. Furthermore, web search \nengines have very lit-tle “semantic” data and are thus unable to cope with \nambiguous search terms. Onto-logical knowledge and appropriate index structures \nare necessary for semantic simi-larity search on XML data extracted from the \nweb. In this paper we present a power-ful ontology index which supports \ndomain-specific semantic similarity search with a new measure for expressing \nthe relevance of query results.
