Plasma homocysteine, a risk factor for vascular disease: plasma levels in health, disease, and drug therapy.

The present article reviews the central features of homocysteine metabolism, and the evidence that moderate homocystinemia may be a risk factor for arteriosclerosis. A survey of the literature of homocysteine in various pathologic conditions is presented, with emphasis on disease states other than homocystinuria, which has been covered recently in excellent review articles. Finally, agents that modulate plasma homocysteine level are reviewed
