In-vehicle information systems (IVIS) provide information to support the driving task, reduce stress, and make a trip more comfortable. Although brief glances to an IVIS might not have a significant effect on safety, visual distractions caused by some in vehicle systems that require longer and more frequent glances are of concern. This study provides a literature review that was carried out to identify occlusion techniques as a measure of the distraction imposed by IVIS. The review considered issues such as shutter open/closed timed, and the variables against which the system is assessed. Also, issues such as training, sample demographics, test environment, number of trial repetitions, impact of primary distractor tasks and how to deal with system response delays are considered.
