Abstract

This updated Recommended Practice provides guidelines for the design and application of speed humps, a geometric design technique to control vehicular traffic speeds along a roadway. Speed humps consist of raised pavement constructed or placed in, on, and across or partly across a roadway. For the purposes of this document, speed humps are defined as a roadway geometric design feature whose primary purpose is to reduce the speed of vehicles traveling along that roadway. Speed humps are not a cure-all for residential traffic problems but where it has been determined that a residential traffic management problem exists, properly designed, constructed and installed speed humps can be an appropriate and effective technique to reduce or eliminate traffic problems. The seven chapters contained herein are as follows: (1) Introduction; (2) Considerations for Speed Humps Use; (3) Community Relations and Administrative Procedures; (4) design Guidelines; (5) Construction and Maintenance Guidelines; (6) Monitoring and Evaluation; (7) Other Key Considerations.
