Nigeria's internal security environment has deteriorated in the last decade. Old security threats have remained or even assumed worrisome dimensions, while new threats have emerged. Some of the old threats that assumed new dimensions include small arms and light weapons (SALW) proliferation, armed robbery, ethno-religious conflicts, militancy, assassinations, human trafficking and kidnapping.
