Occasional cases were subsequently reported, so that Welch1 was able to collect 59 cases of thrombosis and embolism in 1898. The number had increased to 94 in 19222 and Banovitch and Ira3 in their summary of the literature cited 105 cases in 1928. Since then a number of cases have been reported yearly.A majority of the reported cases were associated with chronic arterial and cardiac diseases.
