Valsalva, the anatomist (1666-1723), avoided postmortem examinations when the cause of death was consumption. Morgagni, his pupil (1682-1771), continued this practice avoiding them in order to protect his students as well as for personal reasons. Isocrates (436-338 B.C.), Aristotle (384-322 B.C.), and Galen (131-201 A.D.) appreciated the contagiousness of tuberculosis.
