Dark, dense interstellar clouds are known to be the birthplaces of stars. In his Perspective, [Hiraoka][1] explains how results from laboratory studies, observations of comets, and spectroscopic observations of dark clouds are beginning to shed light on the chemical processes that take place in these clouds.
