Abstract

The work of Baumann, Brieger, Salkowski, and others has seemingly solved the problem of the origin of phenols in urine. It is clear that the urinary phenols arise from intestinal putrefaction, and that they are derived from the tyrosine portion of the protein molecule. However, with the exception of the work of Folin,l little has been done-due probably to the lack of a suitable method-to determine (1) the extent to which phenols may be formed under both normal and pathological conditions, and (2) the relationship between the free and conjugated phenols. It was with these objects in view that the present work was undertaken.
