Abstract

<div class="htmlview paragraph">Future regulations require intelligent solutions for Diesel engine emission reduction. Lowest engine out emissions are necessary to reduce the requirements of exhaust aftertreatment systems. Alternative Diesel combustion processes offer the potential of significant NOx reduction while keeping particulates low, but they are in some load areas highly sensitive to the cylinder charge conditions. Whereas mixture preparation and combustion are already well developed in the stationary mode, in-vehicle operation has not been mastered previously.</div> <div class="htmlview paragraph">This paper describes the author's approach towards Intelligent (IQ) Emission (Em) Reduction with modular and tailored solutions for both combustion system and electronic control. The enabler for the vehicle application of such combustion systems is an intelligent closed-loop combustion control based on a cylinder pressure sensor, that is presented in this paper.</div> <div class="htmlview paragraph">Application of this control strategy in e prototype vehicle lead to a significant NOx reduction while maintaining good driveability. Additionally, results showing significant advantages for standard Diesel combustion are presented, especially with respect to sensor tolerance requirements and reduced calibration effort.</div>
