Abstract

In 1985 the Communist Party of China announced the most wide-ranging reforms of education since the cultural revolution. This book explores the impact of these reforms on the process of schooling and higher education and identifies emerging issues and problems. The primary data for the book are drawn mainly from the experience of reform in Zhejiang Province. Secondary material is drawn from a variety of English and Chinese language sources to facilitate national level analysis. The result is an account of the background to the 1985 Educational Reforms and their consequences, set against their historical, economic and social contexts. Issues within current debates in the international literature on education and development are also reviewed.
