Mössbauer spectra of ferric ammonium alum and hydrated ferric nitrate taken at room temperature in various applied fields up to 50 kOe are presented. A distinctive feature of these spectra is a division into a broad and a sharp component at higher fields. A qualitative interpretation of this and other features of the spectra in terms of atomic-spin relaxation is given. It will be shown that Mössbauer spectroscopy can be expected to yield information not obtainable from other types of measurements.
