India, a developing country, is facing many problems in growth at every point of electrical energy system. In such cases, smart grid is the only solution which provides an open market of electricity generation, transmission and distribution. Indian power sector has taken some steps for framework of smart grid with various regulatory and standards' organizations. India is having various constraints such as financial, geographical etc. for development of smart grid. Some important technical challenges are discussed in this paper. These technical challenges should be solved which could help in development of smart grid in India.
