Subjects covered are: general studies on women in development impact of society on womens roles and status the individual in society: womens behavior patterns and customs socioeconomic participation of rural women education womens work and economic development health and nutrition and fertility/family planning womens informal and formal associations. and law and politics. A critical review of research concepts and concerns points out the dangers of transposing Western ideas of status to other cultures. Also examined are the seeming conflicts between economic participation education and fertility. Although in Western societies economic participation affects fertility in many cultures economic participation is carried on in the home or extended families make economic participation independent of fertility. The role of education in either reinforcing traditional concepts or breaking traditional concepts is discussed.
