Organizational issues have attracted a great deal of attention in logistics. However, developments such as the expanding use of information technology and outsourcing call into question conventional organizational assumptions of past research. This paper proposes a framework for the structural properties of logistics organizations, including supply-chains. Such a framework could be used in research on the organization of logistics and would facilitate comparability among studies. A contingency theory approach is recommended to yield insights into the complex relationships between logistics strategy, structure and performance.
