Wave-mean Flow Interaction

Wave-Mean Flow Interaction is a dynamical process in atmospheric dynamics and dynamic meteorology whereby atmospheric waves (such as planetary or gravity waves) systematically exchange momentum, energy, and potential vorticity with the large-scale, typically zonally averaged, mean flow through wave-induced fluxes and nonlinear correlations, thereby modifying both the mean circulation and the wave field.
