Wave Overtopping

Wave Overtopping is the hydrodynamic phenomenon in coastal and harbor engineering whereby incident waves exceed the crest elevation of a coastal structure, resulting in water discharge over the structure’s top, distinguished from other wave-structure interaction processes by the transgression of wave mass and energy across the structural barrier under free-surface flow conditions.
