Transient Luminous Events
Transient Luminous Events is a class of short-lived luminous electrical discharge phenomena that occur in the upper atmosphere above active thunderstorms, produced by lightning-induced electrical breakdown at mesospheric to lower-ionospheric altitudes and distinguished from conventional tropospheric lightning by their higher occurrence region, optical manifestation, and morphology (e.g., sprites, jets, ELVES).
