Submesoscale Coupling

Submesoscale Coupling is a dynamical process in physical oceanography wherein submesoscale motions (spatial scales of approximately 0.1–10 km) interact with and modulate larger-scale mesoscale eddies and smaller-scale turbulence through ageostrophic instabilities, frontogenesis, and buoyancy-driven circulations, thereby mediating the vertical and horizontal exchange of mass, heat, and nutrients in the upper ocean.
